The Otago schoolboys team retained the Piper Cup in the annual match against Aorangi at Chisholm Park on Friday 16th of December.
The teams contested the singles and reverse singles fixture in cold and windy conditions with Otago eventually winning by a margin of 15 – 5 after taking a 6 ½ – 3 ½ lead in the morning round.
Kris Rush, Ryan Shuttleworth, Cody McMullan and Conor Jamieson recorded 2 wins each for Otago, while Dylan Stock was also unbeaten with a win and a halve.
The annual schoolboys fixture is usually a “Triangular” event which includes Southland. The Ben McCorkindale Cup is played between Otago and Southland and The Simpson Cup between Aorangi and Southland. Unfortunately, for the second year in succession, Southland were unable to field a team to contest the trophies.
The Piper Cup has been a regular fixture for schoolboy golf between Otago and Aorangi for the past 51 years and many of Otago’s Senior and even Masters rep players have started their provincial representation careers in the Piper Cup matches.
