The final of this year’s Senior A pennant series will be the same-old, same-old with defending champion St Clair Blue playing Otago Blue at Balmacewen next weekend.
In one of the most exciting series in recent years, St Clair came from behind to leapfrog Chisholm Links then beat Island Park 5 to 1 in the semifinal at Waldronville on Saturday.
Despite the convincing margin, the match was a tight tussle with five of the games finishing on the final two greens.
St Clair took an early lead but the Island Park players fought back and the contest was in the balance on the homeward nine.
Island Park No1 Andrew Hobbs did not have his best day at the office, losing to Chris Snow by a convincing 4 and 3 margin.
Jarden Hammond (No2) posted the Park’s only win, accounting for the experienced Stephen Hitchcox by a 2 and 1 margin.
St Clair was not taking any chances against the well-performed Island Park quintet, bringing former provincial No1 Brent McEwan into the team.
McEwan was playing his first pennant game of the series after a busy bowling season but he relished playing on his childhood course. He made five birdies but managed to head off Park captain Michael Minty only on the final green.
Greg Johnson beat Monty Wong on the 17th green, while at No6 Jacob Bellamy beat Ken Shaw by the same margin.
The battle between the No5 golfers was tight with Ryan Bellamy and Mike Wray all square playing the final hole.
Wray missed the final green, his approach finishing short and left, and Bellamy’s par was good enough when Wray failed to get up and down.
