The competition involves 8 clubs, fielding teams of 6 players with 5 of the nett scores counting as the team total in each round.

Each of the 8 clubs hosts a round of the competition, in conjunction with their own Saturday field and Wanaka did well to juggle the Inter-club, Men’s Senior Pennants and their usual busy Saturday competition.

In excess of 130 players were squeezed onto the course with no major hold-ups reported and most players around in just over 4 hours.

The leader board changed very little after Wanaka results were recorded, mainly due to an incredible tie between 4 teams for second placing on the day.

Millbrook won the round with a team total of 357. Current leaders Arrowtown, along with Cromwell, Alexandra and Wanaka finished just 6 shots behind on 363.

The competition now goes into recess for the winter and starts again on the 25th of August when Dunstan take their turn as hosts.

Otago B just home against North Otago

Otago B lies in second place in the Coastal senior A pennant series after sneaking home over North Otago at Balmacewen on Saturday.

St Clair extended its lead by beating Otago A by a 4 to 2 margin on the hilltop Corstorphine course in the other match-up.

Despite being without the services of Gary Creedy, Stephen Waby and Paul Velenski, the Oamaru team was no pushover and Otago A only edged ahead after the final game between the No 1 players was halved on the final green. Michael Smith and Michael Ormandy were square with two holes to play and the pair halved the penultimate hole in birdies. Ormandy’s approach to the final green was 25m short of the cup with a three-putt on the cards, but he lipped out for a tap-in. Smith also made a par for the half which put his team in front. The North Otago tail wagged, with Roger Gilchrist beating Tony Ruddenklau with two holes to spare. Gary Watling led by one with two holes to play but lost the 17th to be square with Gregor Croudis with one to play. Croudis approached into a greenside bunker and failed to get up and down, giving Watling Oamaru’s second win. But Daniel Elder, Brandon Hodgson and Mark Paterson all posted solid wins in the middle order, giving the home team the win.

At St Clair, the home team had a 3-to-1 lead over Otago A with Ross Colquhoun, Clayton More and veteran Kim McDonald all posting wins, while Paul Brouwer dropped St Clair’s only game to former Aorangi golfer Cameron Grant. The top two games became the decider, with Otago’s Tyrone Ratahi birdieing the final hole to halve with Tony Giles. John McIntee was two up with five holes to play but St Clair No 2 Stephen Hitchcox made two birdies to get out with a half.

Chisholm Park had a bye on Saturday, while Otago B and the Park team will be out in force next Saturday in an attempt to narrow the gap with St Clair which is on the sideline in round five.

The result still puts St Clair well in front, with 2.5 points and 12 games, while Chisholm Park rises to second place, after securing a half with North Otago.

No 1 Michael Smith led the way for Otago B, beating in-form Brent McEwan (St Clair) with one hole to spare.

Smith turned one down but forged ahead, winning the first three holes of the back nine with two pars and a birdie 3.

McEwan could not find the form he showed at Chisholm Park two weeks ago when he shot an eagle and six birdies, and both players halved the remaining holes in pars, giving Smith a 2 and 1 win.

For Otago B, Brandon Hodgson and Mark Patterson had comfortable wins, while St Clair’s winners were Tony Giles, Ross Colquhoun and Paul Brouwer.

Otago B was on target to win the contest when No 5 Daniel Elder was two ahead of Colquhoun after eight holes. But Colquhoun turned the tables and reversed the margin, to win on the 17th green.

At North Otago, the experienced trio of Kyle and Sean Geary and Mark Collie all posted wins, the Geary brothers at the expense of promising juniors Kris Rush and Cameron Ryder.

Oamaru’s Michael Ormandy required only 13 holes to account for Lyndon Chalmers, while at No 6, Paul Velenski beat Peter Rae 4 and 3.

Chisholm Park had a chance to win away from home when 15-year-old Cody McMullan made a late charge.

Gary Whatling was two up with three holes to play and the match became dormie two when he and McMullan halved the 16th with birdie 3s.

McMullan won the 17th hole to stay alive but managed only a half on the final hole, to lose one down.

Results Central Otago Interclub Round 3

Central Otago Pennants to April 2012

A full field of 30 teams (120 players) contested the final over 18 holes.  The format  for the event is 4BBB stroke play with each club represented by a team of four split into two pairings.  The two Best Ball Netts are added together to arrive at the team total.

On a cool breezy day that threatened several times to turn to rain, four clubs ended up tied at the conclusion of play.

Maniototo, Heriot, Island Park and Roxburgh all finished on a total of 128.

Under the rules of the nationally run competition, the result is decided on count-back and Maniototo were duly announced winners.

Their score cards are now forwarded to New Zealand Golf where they will be compared with the other thirteen District winners scores to determine the National Teams Champions for 2012.

The event is part of the “Srixon” Home Links series of Women’s competitions and the District final was kindly sponsored by local branches of paper Plus.

To add insult to injury, it was a home game for the Balmacewen golfers and an away game for the Park boys, which augurs well for their prospects in the series.

The Chisholm Park tail wagged, with Sean Geary, Peter Rae and Matthew Heaton all posting wins.

Geary beat Thomas Gillan and Rae beat Murray Edgar with both matches going the full distance while Heaton beat John McIntee with one hole to spare.

Otago A dominated the top three, with Tyrone Ratahi beating Mark Collie 3 and 2 and Luke Murdoch downing Lyndon Chalmers by the same margin.

A close match between the No 2 players ended in a valuable half for the Park with Otago junior order of merit winner Antony McCullough and former Aorangi representative Cameron Grant finishing square.

Meanwhile, the strong St Clair team romped to a 5-1 win overNorth Otago at St Clair to take a commanding lead in the competition.

None of the St Clair players suffered a loss, with the Oamaru golfers’ point coming from two halves in the lower order.

Clayton More (St Clair) halved withNorth Otago greenkeeper Gary Creedy and Paul Brouwer (St Clair) halved with Gary Whatling in a battle of the No 6 players.

Tony Giles, Stephen Hitchcox, Chris Snow and Greg Johnson all posted good wins for St Clair, which now leads the series with two points and nine games.
