Taieri celebrated its first year back in the metropolitan men’s senior A pennant series by going back to the top of the points table.
Taieri beat the Chisholm team 5-1 on the Chisholm Links course on Saturday to gain three points and now has a total of 17 points with 26.5 games after the seventh round. It shares the competition lead with Otago.
Island Park helped Taieri’s cause by holding Otago to a draw on its Waldronville course, restricting the Balmacewen team to a single point for the draw.
The top two Island Park players set the scene with good wins at the expense of two of Otago’s previously unbeaten players.
Michael Smith dished out Duncan Croudis’ first loss of the season, winning with two holes to spare, while No2 Monty Wong won the 17th hole to beat Tyrone Ratahi 3 and 1.
Park’s captain Michael Minty ensured the draw by beating Thomas Gillan with three holes to spare while Brandon Hodgson, John McIntee and Ben Patston all won for Otago.
The results leave Taieri’s Mark Andrews as the star of the series. He has won all seven games while Chisholm’s Jason Pegler remains unbeaten with five wins and a half.
Despite Croudis and Ratahi no longer being on he unbeaten list, Otago is well served by John McIntee with four wins and a half from five starts while Ben Patston has juggled his commitment with the premier rugby competition to win all of his three golf games.
St Clair Blue continues its resurgence. It is clearly in third place with 10 points and is well placed to make the playoffs.
However, the top St Clair team did not have everything its own way and only edged home against St Clair Gold at St Clair on Saturday, Blue players Cody McMullan, Jakob Bleach and Stephen Hitchcox all had convincing wins but Nathan Swift and Luke Worthington posted wins for the Gold team.
The result came down to the outcome of the game between two of the club’s juniors, Joseph Hancock and Parker Aluesi finishing all square.
